Portland Studio Photographer | Recent Stock Photography Portraits

Hey all!
I've been really bad about updating my blog with images from my stock photo shoots. Here's a little bit of background first. In the fall last year I moved my photography business into a studio here in Portland. I mainly use it for stock photo shoots but it also provides a great indoor location for when the weather is poor outside. It's been great so far, and I am really blessed to be here. As far as stock photography goes, I shoot exclusively for iStockphoto.com and buyers go there to purchase royalty free images (which basically means people can use my images for promotional and commercial use).

Some of my biggest inspirations in the stock photography world sell many photos of people, in both a studio setting or in natural places outdoors. I want to do both and feel like it's heading that direction. Shooting stock is fun, because anything sells. It's also a very creative outlet and I find myself often dressing up in costumes and creating characters for myself (as the model). Anyway, enough rambling. Here's a quick video I made showing the lighting set up for my shoot today. I'll be photographing one person and we'll probably use some props. I might move the lights around a little once we get going, but after doing a few test shots I like the look they give. Stay tuned for photos!

Portland Fashoin Photographer | Jade Rose Designs

Last week, my alarm went off at a ungodly early hour of the morning, but I knew that meant one thing: fashion photo-shoot time with Jade Rose Designs. I haven't done many fashion shoots before but I was eager to wake up early and get some rad photos with my friends Jaderose, Rachel and Katherine. Our plan was to do the shoot in a nature setting, but it snowed enough the night before to hinder us from leaving the city. We decided to compromise and do a grungy urban setting near my studio at an old abandoned gas station. We all had a ton of fun on this shoot, and came away with some great modeling material for Jaderose to use for her hair piece design company.

Portland Wedding Photographer | Chris and Samae

Chris and Samae are two very fun and unique people who both have a very exciting attitude. They're summer, Hood River OR wedding, was such an experience. I loved sharing with them in being a part of their special day and helping create memories, capture precious moments and spend time with them and their guests. Samae found me though a student of hers that she taught a photography class to, I had photographed her student's wedding earlier last year, which can be found here. Chris and Samae had such a lovely wedding, everybody was so happy and kind. It was a beautiful day with beautiful weather. Thank you Chris and Samae, I really enjoyed photographing your wedding!

Jineen | Senior Photos

Jineen and I did her senior photos in two locations. The first was a small park-like area near my house. It's a pretty simple looking island in between two streets near my house, technically I don't think it's even considered a park by the city. During the fall it's covered in a thick blanket of leaves and is gorgeous! Afterward, we went down to Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge to continue shooting. Despite the light drizzle that day we came away with a afternoon well spent. I really enjoyed getting hot chocolate after the shoot with Jineen, and Trevor, her boyfriend who graduated from my high school last year. Thanks Jineen for an awesome shoot and being really fun to photograph!

Dragomirs | A Family Session

I met Diana Dragomir at my church, Door of Hope only a few months ago, although it seems like we've known each other much longer. She came to me inquiring about family photos one night at church and we scheduled a shoot for December. I have been shooting a lot at Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge in SE Portland, I think its a fantastic location for portraits. After a few direction miscommunications, we finally met up at Oaks Bottom and began shooting. We were lucky enough to get some beautiful lighting and kept dry during our shoot, it's amazing to find a dry day in Portland in December. Thanks Dragomir family! I really enjoy our photo-shoot together!

Josh & Caroline | Portland OR Wedding

My good friends Josh and Caroline were married a few weeks back on December 21st, 2011. These cats are super fun to be around, and I've enjoyed getting to know them this year. The ceremony was at The Well church, which is Caroline's home church here in Portland. I attended the rehearsal and found out how close The Well is to my new photography studio. Right up in the same NE Portland neighborhood. I'm glad to have met my friends Josh and Caroline over the summer last year and look forward to many more fun times with them in the future! Their reception was at Kells Irish Pub in downtown Portland. We also sneaked away the three of us for a bit to take photos at the Grand Central Library Downtown.

Robert and Sindhu | Port Arthur Texas Wedding

Wow, it's definitely not cool that I haven't updated this blog for a while. Shame on me. What is cool however is the fact that in December I was able to travel out to Texas to photograph the wedding of Robert and Sindhu. It was a beautiful trip and such a beautiful wedding. I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to travel all the way to Texas to meet Robert and Sindhu and take part in their special, once in a lifetime experience, at their wedding. I've always wanted to travel with my photography and this is a great starting point!

Charlotte and Kara dual senior photo session

I've known Charlotte and Kara for quite sometime now. Charlotte is an old childhood friend of mine that I've known literally since some of my first childhood memories. I was really excited to do their senior photos, and it was my first time doing a dual senior session. We went down to Oaks Bottom to do the first half of the shoot, then we found ourselves next to a very vibrant red wall in inner South East Portland as we were making our way up to my studio to finish up the shoot. I'm really excited to have a studio now to be shooting in, especially this time of year when it's cold and wet outside. I plan on having an open house party of the studio in January. I'll definitely let everyone know about it once it's more planed out. Thanks Charlotte and Kara for being great models and making it a fun shoot!

Fallstar Premiere of Horse Without a Rider music video

Back in September I helped out my friends in Fallstar with shooting their first ever music video. We shot it in the basement of a North East Portland apartment building and were hoping to capture exactly what the guys in the band had envisioned for this song put to images. This was my first attempt shooting video, seeing as I mainly do stills, but we were all extremely pleased with the results. You may have seen Fallstar on my blog before, either in this post or this one. They're good friends of mine and I enjoy photographing their shows whenever I am available. The music video premiered last night at 12:00am. I look forward to seeing what is ahead for my friends here in Fallstar. They are very talented dudes!

Savanna's Senior Photos at Oaks Bottom

I really enjoyed this shoot with Savanna for several reasons. She is a really easy going person to work with, and made it very fun for both of us. Also, I was trying out a new location here in Portland called Oaks Bottom which is a nature park near Sellwood. I used to come to this place all the time as a kid with my family to catch frogs, bugs, and all sorts of fun critters. It was so much fun as a little boy and I remember when we were down here for this shoot, I kept on reminiscing about all the times I would come with my family. In fact I hadn't gone down there in at least 7 or 8 years before this shoot. I've been using it more frequently for shoots and I'm really enjoying the space and look it gives us for outdoor portrait shoots. Here are my favorites from Savanna's shoot...

Autumn Recap

Hey everyone! This autumn season here in Oregon has been one of the most beautiful seasons I've seen. The colors have been magnificent and not to mention very sunny and dry for weeks on end. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make it because of transportation issues (seeing as at that point I did not have my drivers license, but now I do!). This will give me the opportunity to share a little bit about what I know and how I use it in my everyday work of photography. I recently got asked by my friends in Fallstar to shoot a music video for them. I was surprised when Chris (the lead vocalist) asked me to do it, because most people know me for doing still photographs, not video. I told him that I would be happy to shoot it for them even though I honestly don't have that much experience making films. (A small side note: the camera I use for all my photo-shoots also takes high quality video. I use a Canon 5d mark II) All that aside, the shoot went excellent, we came away with great footage and I'm really excited to see the final product. Chris will be editing the footage we came away with. Here are a few still photographs I snapped during the shoot.

Last week my family and I went down to see friends in California for a week. My parents grew up in Silicon Vally so we went to reconnect with old friends. We took a full day to visit the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and enjoy the California beach. We road the roller coaster, ate cotton candy, chilled on the beach and even saw a REAL MERMAID! Groovy baby yeah! It was a fabulous day of just relaxing and taking it easy. These are the shots that came out well on film. I shot a roll of Kodak ektachrome slide film that expired in 2001.

Josh and Caroline Engagement Session

When I first met Josh and Caroline, it was at Caroline's brother Nate's wedding (see here). Nate's wedding was in LA and I didn't know that Caroline and Josh would be on the same flight as me since they're from Portland too. It was cool getting to connect with them throughout our trip and be on the same round trip flight as them. We didn't even plan to be flying together when we booked our tickets.
Anyway after the trip, we connect up here in Portland and when Caroline suggested that we do their E-session photos at Stumptown Coffee, I got really excited because I love Stumptown and knew that it would be a fun way to do a photo shoot. We were hit with loads of "sexy summer light" and enjoyed getting to walk around Division and Hawthorne together. I'm excited to be photographing their wedding in December and am blessed that our paths crossed in such an unexpected way. Sometimes those unexpected encounters are the ones that are specifically placed into our lives for good reason. Josh and Caroline, I'm super glad we met and I'm looking forward to many more encounters with you!

As Nate might say "this was a pretty cozy day", which in fact it was. Cozy would be the overly-simplistic way to describe this amazingly beautiful joy filled day. Nate and Stephanie are lovely love-giving people and their guests and family were all so kind. Joy was the center piece of their wedding. Nate has been a radically amazing friend since I was in junior high. It was he who helped me stand on my own two feet with photography when still starting out and has been able to give me advice and wisdom all the times through. I knew Stephanie was perfect for Nate after I first met her, and then Nate couldn't stop talking to me about her. I am so blessed to have Nate and Stephanie in my life. They truly are some of the most generous and humble people I know.

My shoot with Mindy and David took place in downtown Salem OR on a very sunny bright Tuesday morning. I couldn't have started my day off better then with these two lovely people. Mindy suggested that we include photos at the carousel on the waterfront, which I think was a fun idea. Ok, the cheesy way to describe this beautiful day is faerie tales do come true. In all reality though this day was perfect. Sam and Sabrina are such fun people to be around and so easy going. However, Sam sure knows how to get a party going. I can't believe that at the end of the night he stage dived into the crowd of guests. I have never seen a groom do an act of awesomeness of this magnitude before! There was karaoke which I would totally recommend to anyone planing a wedding. The guests loved it and it makes for such a fun time that all the relatives will enjoy. Anyway, back to the love story of Sam and Sabrina. They are 100% loving and honest people who have huge hearts. May 29th, 2011 was a FUNTASTIC, beautiful and joy filled day. Thank you so much Sam and Sabrina for asking me to do your wedding photos! It was so enjoyable.

Summer Sunset

Last night I headed out for Crown Point in the gorge with a group of friends. After the 25min or so drive east from Portland, I found the sun setting behind a cloudscape and my photog senses were going crazy. There was so much I wanted to shoot and limited light left in the day. These few photos are some of my favorites which ended up being the first ones I edited too. The first one of a classic red car was extremely underexposed by accident, and there is only so much shadow recovery one can do before the image loses quality. So this is about as bright as I can get the image while keeping most of the quality in tacked.

The Henderson Family

I did a portrait shoot for the Hendersons last month up in Washougal Washington and we all had a great time. We knew going into it that there was a high chance for rain, so I suggested that they bring umbrellas. Luckily there was no real need for them other than being a good prop in some pictures.

I photographed Chani and Kacey's wedding back in February. It always makes me happy when my clients are so pleased with their photos that they book a second shoot. Yay for happy returning customers!

Yesterday I didn't have anything planed on my schedule, until Katie and I decided to get together for coffee on Hawthorne. We went to the Fresh Pot (which is right inside of Powells) and talked. Later we ventured out to explore the surrounding area and found some awesomely boss places to take photos at. Eventually we were joined by our friend Brandon who posed for a few photos too, and finally Moriah found us inside House of Vintage. I enjoyed a delightful afternoon with my friends on Hawthorne and I'm glad I had some film and a camera to document our adventurous time spent together. :)

I wanted to make a post of images that I've either finished wrapping up on different shoots, or simply pictures that I from this month and last that I haven't gotten around to posting. Also I haven't shot a whole lot these last few weeks seeing as finals were last week at school. But now I am on summer vacation and have more time to spend behind the camera. This upcoming weekend, I am photographing a wedding at the Mcmenamins Grand Lodge, so I will have quite the pocket full of pictures after that.

I met the guys from Adonijah at a local concert back in March, and we really it it off well since then. This is my first time ever doing band promo shots but I loved everything about it. To compare it to something I'm a little more familiar with, it's kind of like doing groomsmen shots for weddings, except much more causal. These guys were all super laid back and really easy going. It is always exciting getting to work with such cool people and make new connections to a new client base.

This week I did a shoot for my friends at school, Qiana and Lily. We had a mixture of both "champion" and "sexy" light to work with. I'm pretty stoked that we had a fun time between classes and came away with some boss images. There is a field across the street from our school building which is where the majority of these shots were taken. We did a casual group pic which I turned ultra awesome+cheesy.

Trying new things - with film

Back in 2006 was when I got my first camera. It was an old 35mm film SLR, after shooting with it for about a year I upgraded to my first digital SLR camera. Now, as I've been experimenting and playing around with film in a little more depth, I went back to that first 35mm camera and recently shot a roll of Ilford Delta black and white film (for all you technical people who are curious to know what type of film this is), Which, shooting black and white film in this camera was kind of a big deal to me because, I have never shot black and white film with it before, despite having it for many years. Normally, when you get 36 exposures on a roll, you're lucky if 10 of those turn out well. Well I am really pleased with this roll, and here are a few of my favorite shots. Enjoy!

Mary and Eric Wedding (full)

This was such a joy filled day. Love was so present in the eyes of Mary and Eric. Their friends and family expressed fellowship and joy for them throughout the entire evening. I am so glad I was able to be apart of this joyful wedding when my two friends became one. I met with Mary and Eric this evening to proof the pictures with them and I love the reactions that newly weds have to their wedding photos! The laughter, the smiles, and the jokes that couples make when seeing their wedding photos for the first time is why I love my job so much! I feel so blessed to be able to capture moments that Mary and Eric didn't notice or forgot about during their wedding, and to be there when they first see those moments in black and white and color.

Thank you Mary and Eric!! You two are wonderful, I'm so happy for you!

Candid Street Portraits

While waiting for a friend at Pioneer Square, I took a walk around the streets near the square and shot street candids. Using only my super wide lens (17-40mm) I shot from my hip letting my camera hang from the neck strap at my waist. Most of the people I passed didn't even notice I had a camera on me, which made for the all natural candid moments. In the past, when I would do some street photography, I used a telephoto lens most of the time, "sniping" people from far away. Using my wide lens made for a different effect which I am very pleased with.

Aaron Gillespie Concert

Earlier when I was notified that Aaron Gillespie (former Underoath drummer) was coming to town, I was excited to attend the show, it hadn't even crossed my mind to photograph it. There was a contest held on the Facebook event page for a free ticket that I entered and surprisingly won. After talking to the right people I ended up with a free ticket and a photography stage pass at willcall. Moriah, my sister, came along and we both had a very powerful evening. Aaron is a great musical artist and has the best motives for doing what he does. You can read more about him and his mission on his website here.

Chani + Kacey Wedding

I'm becoming a film junkie

It always makes a photographer want to go out a shoot more film when seeing that the last roll he shot turned out well. This last weekend I went and spent some time with my friends Nick (teal hoodie) and Daniel (purple hoodie). We went to downtown St. Johns where I picked up some film and had a great time goofing around and shooting photos. I just took the exposed film to get developed yesterday. After seeing the photos for the first time today, I'm really happy with the exposure in all of them! The light, the color, contrast, and focus are all great! Anyway, after seeing two successful rolls of film shot, I'm ready to go out there and do it again! It was a funtastic weekend with my bros!

These photographs were shot on 35mm Kodak film. Back 5 years ago, when I first picked up a camera, it was also a 35mm camera. I've taken an interest in shooting film again, mostly for personal stuff. This roll was the second roll of film I've shot on my Bell & Howell 35J camera. Basically it's as simple as cameras come, no manual controls except for three iconic setting on the front of the lens, which work as f/stops. I'm really enjoying the comeback of shooting film, though it can put a hole in your wallet for film cost and developing. Enjoy my second roll from this simple little "toy camera"! :)

Fallstar Mustache Show

Last Saturday I enjoyed seeing Portland's Fallstar with a group of friends. Normally I don't bring my camera to concerts but I figured this one would be a good "small" show to shoot. I like doing concert photography for fun, but wouldn't want to do it professionally, there are just way to many uncontrollable lighting variables. It's totally a hit or miss situation, but I still really enjoyed seeing the guys in Fallstar while taking photos of them on stage. It was a great evening! :)

Portrait Saturday

Yesterday I had a very refreshing and enjoyable time with my sister Mo, and friends Katie and Brandon. We went out and just shot some relaxed portraits up at Powell Butte and simply enjoyed the beautiful sunny weather in January. Who would have expected this gorgeous weather in the middle of winter? Afterward, we went to a local concert with the band Fallstar and I shot a few photos. Concert photography is always hit or miss because there are so many more uncontrollable lighting variable. I like doing it just for fun but wouldn't want to do it professionally, I think I'll stick with portraits and weddings for now :) Photos from the concert will soon follow this post. Atherton Family

The Athertons are a great family. Thank you guys for letting me come to your cozy home for our photo shoot. (We were going to do it in the pearl but we got rained out.) This was my last shoot of 2010 and it couldn't have been better. Thank you, Athertons for a fun filled afternoon and for putting the cap on a great year! :)

2010 was a great year in the books and it was all because of my wonderful clients who rocked and who I am glad I was able to work with. You guys are so cool and I just wanted to thank all of you in one place. Thanks to everyone who and to put up with difficulties during our shoots like mosquitoes, rain, wind, freakishly cool weather, tornadoes, sea monsters and/or all of the above.
If I didn't have such rad people wanting me to take their photos, I'd probably be a socially deprived landscape photographer living in a wooden cabin out in the boonies, but thanks to you, I don't have to be that and can enjoy working with the great people that I do! It's been a great year guys and I look forward to another awesome year with both new and familiar faces in front of my lens. :)
